The Ordinary Skincare

Let me start by saying that I am obsessed with skincare and that’s why I currently use more than 10 different products in my routine. And I don’t think that you need that many but I hope this post will help you figure out which products would benefit your skin.

Almost all products that I use are from the brand The Ordinary, except cleansers and micellar water because they haven’t released that yet but maybe they will add that to their line someday as well. I chose The Ordinary because they offer high quality products for affordable prices which I really appreciate since I can’t afford to spend tons of money on skincare but I still like having nice skin –  who doesn’t?! I am very thankful for them being a breath of fresh air in the beauty industry.

My regime is targeted towards controlling minor breakouts and oily T-zone, preventing and smoothing first wrinkles, evening out my skin tone and texture and making my complexion glow.

I also made a video where I talk about my top 5 products from the Ordinary and below the video are the descriptions and reviews of all 13 products that I use or have used in the past.

I also included my entire skincare routine and suggestions for all skin types on how to start your routine – all of that is down below. I hope you will find it helpful!

Retinol 1% (replaced by Retinol 1% in Squalane)

  • especially appropriate for:
    • oily and acne prone skin
    • anti-aging
    • pigmentation

Retinol 1% is getting replaced by Retinol 1% in Squalane in September 2017. It comes in a 30 ml tube and has a thick silicony texture. The new one will be more liquidy and it will come in a 30 ml size bottle with a dropper.

Retinol encourages cell turnover which leaves the skin healthier and smoother. It’s great for reducing blemishes, dark spots and fine lines. It’s pretty much a miracle worker that helps with everything you can think of!

I am really enjoying the effects of it now but it was very irritating to my skin at first. My entire face got flaky and I got a bit burned on more sensitive parts even though I tried to avoid those areas of my face when applying the product. I found a solution online which suggested to use a pea size amount of Retinol mixed in with about 5 drops of oil and let me tell you – this works! My skin never got irritated again but the positive effects stayed and I love using it now. Those with more sensitive skin should probably check other formulations of retinoids.

It can be used daily in the evenings.

Retinol

Advanced Retinoid 2% (renamed to Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion)

  • especially appropriate for:
    • oily and acne prone skin
    • anti-aging
    • pigmentation

It’s a milky liquid that comes in a 30 ml bottle with a dropper. It used to be called Advanced Retinoid 2% but it’s been recently changed to Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion, formulation is still the same though.

I bought this one because I experienced extreme purging when I used the Retinol 1% and this one is supposed to be weaker and less irritating but with similar effects. I liked it for those reasons but I have pretty much stopped using it since I figured out how to use Retinol 1% without irritation since it’s way more powerful than this one. I still recommend it for those with more sensitive skin.

It can be used daily in the evenings.

Ascorbyl Glucoside Solution 12%

  • especially appropriate for:
    • pigmentation

It’s a gel-like product that comes in a 30 ml size bottle with a dropper.

Ascorbyl Glucoside Solution is a brightening serum that reduces the signs of aging. I chose this form of Vitamin C because it’s a bit less potent but also less irritating and it feels very pleasant on the skin. It doesn’t make an instant difference on the face but I like the feeling of it on my skin.

It can be used daily in the mornings or evenings.

Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution

  • especially appropriate for:
    • oily and acne prone skin
    • anti-aging
    • pigmentation

This is probably my favorite product ever. It’s a liquid that comes in a 240 ml plastic bottle.

It’s an exfoliating toner that brightens the skin and improves texture. It feels very mild on the skin but it still makes it clearer and more glowy. I am so in love with it because it really helped me with clogged pores. It doesn’t irritate my skin so I can use it more often than other products but it still has great effect.

It can be used daily in the evenings.

Azelaic Acid Suspension 10%

  • especially appropriate for:
    • oily and acne prone skin
    • pigmentation

It has a creamy texture and it comes in a 30 ml size tube.

It brightens the skin tone and reduces the look of blemishes. The effects of Azelaic Acid are visible very fast especially when you have some acne scars or pimples. It makes them go away quite faster. I like it because of the difference it made on my skin and because it doesn’t feel irritating at all.

It can be applied in the mornings or evenings but I prefer to use it in the evenings because it can flake when other products are applied over it.

AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution

  • especially appropriate for:
    • oily and acne prone skin
    • anti-aging
    • pigmentation

It’s a pink (yes, pink!) watery liquid that comes in a 30 ml size bottle with a dropper.

It’s a very strong exfoliating facial that brightens complexion, evens out the skin tone and reduces the look of fine lines. It also helps clearing the blemishes and pores.
It has a tingly sensation on the skin so it’s not the most pleasant thing to use but it instantly makes the skin nicer. I usually use in the evenings and I can hardly believe how clearer and more radiant my skin looks the next morning. But be careful because it can be quite irritating to the skin.

It can be used once a week for 10 minutes but I usually leave it on for only 5.

Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5

  • especially appropriate for:
    • dry or dehydrated skin

It has a gel-like texture and it comes in a 30 ml size bottle with a dropper.

It spreads easily on the skin and absorbs quickly. I really liked using it before I bought the Natural Moisturizing Factors but now I feel like I don’t need it as much since my skin gets enough hydration from the moisturizer which also contains hyaluronic acid. It could be a great product for those with very dry skin that need additional moisture.

It can be used daily in the mornings and evenings.

Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA

  • especially appropriate for:
    • dry or dehydrated skin

It comes in a 30 ml or a 100 ml tube and it has a thick creamy texture.

This is my absolutely favorite moisturizer because it keeps the skin super hydrated but it almost instantly dries down to an almost matte finish which is great for applying makeup over it. Only a pea size amount is needed for the entire face because it spreads very easily. Moisturizers that are this hydrating usually feel very greasy but this one leaves a very pleasant feeling on the face.

It can be used daily in the mornings and evenings.

100% Organic Cold-Pressed Rose Hip Seed Oil

  • especially appropriate for:
    • dry or dehydrated skin

It’s an oil that comes in a 30 ml bottle with a dropper.

Rose hip oil is full of essential fatty acids and pro-vitamin A. It’s great for all skin types, even oily because it doesn’t clog pores and cause breakouts. Apply it to the face before bedtime and wake up with a smooth and nourished skin. It’s one of my favorite skincare products because it makes my skin look healthy and it helps prevent dehydration.

It can be used daily in the mornings and evenings but preferably just in the evenings because it can feel a bit heavier on the skin right after it’s applied.

Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%

  • especially appropriate for:
    • oily and acne prone skin
    • pigmentation

It has a light gel-like texture and it comes in a 30 ml size bottle with a dropper.

Niacinamide (vitamin B3) reduces the appearance of skin blemishes and congestion and zinc reduces the oiliness of the skin by balancing the sebum activity. I haven’t seen much of a difference on my skin with this one but I haven’t given up on it because it’s not one of those products that would instantly show major effects. It still feels very pleasant on the skin.

It can be used daily in the mornings and evenings.

“Buffet”

  • especially appropriate for:
    • anti-aging
    • hydration

It’s a lightweight gel-like serum that comes in a 30 ml bottle with a dropper.

It contains various peptides, probiotics, amino acids and hyaluronic acid. It’s a real treat for the skin and it makes it feel plump and hydrated. I love using this one because my skin feels kind of happy and content when I apply it. But only a small amount should be used at a time because it can flake when other products are applied over it.

It can be used daily in the mornings and evenings.

Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG

  • especially appropriate for:
    • dark circles and puffiness

It comes in a 30 ml size bottle with a dropper and has a bit thicker gel-like texture.

It can be used under the eyes to reduce pigmentation and puffiness which sounded perfect for my dark circles. I think it does help with the puffy eyes but I wish it did more for the pigmentation.

It can be used daily in the mornings and evenings.

Argireline Solution 10%

  • especially appropriate for:
    • anti-aging

This is a liquidy serum with a peptide complex. It comes in a 30 ml size bottle with a dropper.

Argireline is claimed to prevent the formation of wrinkles by inhibiting muscle movement, similar to botox but of course not as strong. It’s supposed to be used around the eyes and in the forehead area. At first I thought that it doesn’t work because the fine lines around my eyes looked pretty much the same but then I noticed my concealer creasing way less than before which I liked.

It can be used daily in the mornings and evenings.
